A tragic incident last month brought the town of Menomonie together in grief as four residents, including a beloved married couple, lost their lives in an aviation accident far from home. The community rallied this past Sunday at the local airport to pay tribute to Ross Nelson and Raimi Rundle, whose absence left an indelible mark on those who knew them. Anne Priester, Ross's sister, spoke about the significance of the day, emphasizing that Ross was not only her brother but Raimi felt like family too. "This gathering is our way of keeping their memory alive," she expressed.

Amidst the sorrow, the event served as a beacon of hope for the future by raising funds for the couple's three children, aged 12, nine, and six. Friends and relatives came forward to ensure these young ones would be supported financially while growing up without their parents. Bruce Trimble, a close friend of Ross and Raimi, noted the overwhelming turnout, with attendees arriving both by car and plane, transforming the once-quiet airstrip into a vibrant hub of solidarity. "It's heartwarming to see how much the community cares," he remarked, highlighting the profound impact of the couple's presence in Dunn County.

Organizers chose the location deliberately—it was a place dear to Ross and Raimi’s hearts, where they spent countless hours alongside their father's hangar. This connection made the fundraiser deeply personal for everyone involved. Kylee Riek expressed gratitude for having shared moments with the couple, while Ron Riek believed Ross would have been proud seeing so many aviators gather under his hangar's roof. Moving forward, the organizers aim to preserve Ross and Raimi's legacy through stories and memories shared with their children. Through such efforts, the kids will grow knowing just how remarkable their parents truly were. Aviation enthusiasts traveled long distances to attend, proving that even in loss, communities can find strength and unity.

Grief often unites people in unexpected ways, revealing the resilience and compassion inherent within us. By honoring Ross and Raimi, the citizens of Menomonie demonstrated that love transcends death, leaving behind legacies built on kindness and remembrance. Such acts remind us all of the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones and supporting one another during life's most challenging times.

Exciting New Addition at Sioux Park Pool for Summer Fun

This summer, children at the Jimmy Hilton Pool in Sioux Park, Rapid City, will enjoy a new green dinosaur slide, replacing the beloved blue one that served pool-goers for nearly 30 years. The blue slide, which dated back to the pool's opening in 2000, was worn out due to weathering and extensive use. Approved by the Rapid City Council last fall, the new slide offers a smoother surface and prioritizes safety. According to Recreation Program Specialist Teaghan Slagle, the replacement was necessary due to the old slide's dull colors and scratches, which posed potential safety hazards. Sioux Park, Parkview, and Horace Mann outdoor pools are set to open on May 30, with Roosevelt Swim Center's outdoor pool opening on May 24.

Understanding the Critical Balance Between Emergency and Non-Emergency Assistance

A Pontiac mother, Kelli Bryant, has been charged with three counts each of first-degree child abuse and welfare fraud for allegedly abandoning her three children, aged 12, 13, and 15, in a house filled with feces and garbage. Despite food drop-offs, the children lived in severe neglect, rarely leaving the house. Bryant, who has a mental health condition, was bound over to Oakland County Circuit Court for trial after a hearing found sufficient evidence against her. She remains in custody on a $50,000 cash bond. The case highlights the importance of understanding when to call emergency versus non-emergency lines for critical situations.

Reimagining Youth Sports: A Path to Joy and Development

Former Manchester United academy coach Lee Unsworthy emphasizes the need for a shift in parental behavior at junior sports events. He advocates for parents to support and encourage their children without criticism, allowing them to enjoy and develop a love for the game independently. Unsworthy warns against excessive focus on elitism, which can lead to stress and disappointment. Clinical psychologist Cher McGillivray supports this view, noting that yelling from the sidelines can trigger stress responses in children. With growing participation in sports like football, spurred by successes such as the Matildas, clubs are implementing cultural changes to promote healthy competition and enjoyment. The key message is to let children lead their sporting journey while fostering their emotional and human development.
