On April 8, 2026, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) officially revealed the comprehensive terms of its new four-year contract, which was tentatively agreed upon with studios and streamers the previous weekend. This pivotal agreement, reached through diligent negotiations led by WGA West executive director Ellen Stutzman and negotiating committee co-chairs John August and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, promises substantial benefits for union members.

A cornerstone of the new contract is a massive $321 million infusion into the WGA's health plan, a critical measure following cumulative losses of $122 million in 2023 and 2024 due to industry shifts and rising healthcare costs. This significant boost, facilitated by increased caps on writer earnings that trigger health contributions—such as the cap for screen projects rising from $250,000 to $400,000 by May 2, 2028—represents the largest-ever enhancement to this union benefit. Additionally, the health fund will see increased contribution rates of 3.25 percent in the first year and 0.5 percent in the second, reaching 16.75 percent, and a $25 million transfer from the Paid Parental Leave fund. However, members will face new $75 monthly premiums, increased deductibles, and higher earnings thresholds for coverage starting in 2027.

The agreement also addresses the burgeoning area of artificial intelligence. While the WGA did not secure direct compensation for works used to generate AI outputs, the contract mandates that companies provide written notice when licensing scripts for commercial generative AI systems. The union also reserves the right to discuss potential compensation for writers in such scenarios.

Financially, writers will see a 1.5 percent increase in most minimum payments in the first year, followed by 3 percent increases in the subsequent three years. Residuals for high-budget streaming projects, both domestic and foreign, will climb by 2.5 percent in 2027 and another 2.5 percent in 2029. Notably, successful streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ will significantly increase foreign residual payments to writers, with a 6 percent rise in the first year. The streaming success bonus will also be enhanced, with titles viewed by 20 percent of a streamer's domestic subscribers receiving a bonus of 75 percent of their domestic and foreign residual, up from 50 percent.

For screenwriters, second-step payments for initial screenplay drafts will increase from 200 percent to 225 percent of the applicable minimum. A new minimum payment for "page one" rewrites, which involve extensive script revisions, has also been established. Furthermore, starting in 2027, TV writers will benefit from a new rule preventing "if/come" deals from being exclusive until an initial fee is paid, and format fees will increase by 42 percent, extending span protections to more writers.

The four-year term of the contract deviates from the traditional three-year norm, reflecting the AMPTP's desire for greater labor stability following the 2023 strikes. Despite the inherent risks of a longer term amidst industry consolidation and rapid AI advancements, the studios sweetened the deal to ensure the WGA's acceptance.
