A recent national survey indicates a notable increase in public concern regarding the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Two-thirds of American citizens now express the view that ICE's immigration enforcement efforts have become excessive. This sentiment marks an 11-point rise since the previous summer, reflecting a growing unease across the nation, particularly among independent voters and Democrats.
This shift in public perception coincides with a significant decline in presidential approval ratings. The current administration's overall job approval stands at 39%, with a substantial 56% disapproving, and an unprecedented 51% expressing strong disapproval. This level of strong opposition represents the highest recorded by Marist polling since tracking began in 2017, surpassing even the period immediately following the January 6, 2021, incident at the U.S. Capitol.
The diminished support for the president is observed among key demographics that previously contributed to his electoral success, including younger individuals, Latino communities, and independent voters. Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, notes that these groups are increasingly distancing themselves from the administration's policies. While the president's core supporters largely maintain their allegiance, there is a clear erosion of broader public confidence.
For instance, regarding the enforcement of immigration laws, a significant majority of Americans, approximately 60%, voiced disapproval of ICE's performance. A similar proportion also believes that the agency's operations are diminishing rather than enhancing national safety. This public sentiment was particularly highlighted after two American citizens were tragically killed during federal immigration operations in Minnesota, leading to a reallocation of enforcement leadership and a reduction of federal agents in the state.
Despite the administration's claims of targeting "hard criminals," the individuals involved in the Minnesota incidents did not fit this description, prompting calls for a "softer touch" from the president. However, public opinion surveys consistently show that the majority views protests against ICE as legitimate expressions of public concern rather than unlawful acts.
Beyond immigration, the president's handling of the economy and foreign policy also faces widespread disapproval. Over half of the population disapproves of his economic management, and similar numbers express dissatisfaction with his foreign policy decisions. Notably, a majority perceives the current tariffs as detrimental to the economy, and there is strong opposition to the hypothetical acquisition of Greenland. Furthermore, a significant majority believes that presidential military actions should require consultation with Congress.
Despite the president's base remaining steadfast in their support across various policy areas, including ICE's conduct, tariffs, and even the notion of acquiring Greenland, the broader electorate is increasingly critical. While Republicans prioritize immigration as a top concern, a majority of Democrats and independents emphasize the importance of lowering prices as the administration's primary objective, further illustrating the growing disconnect between the president's core supporters and the wider American public.
