1. Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG)

The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) is a taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year or level, up to a maximum of $2,000 per person. To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person;
  • Not be a high school student;
  • Have the required AIG supporting documents;
  • Register with your provincial/territorial apprenticeship authority as an apprentice in a designated Red Seal trade; and
  • Provide proof that you have successfully completed either the first or second year (level/block) (or equivalent) in a designated Red Seal trade.

Note: The AIG program is set to end on March 31, 2025. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

2. Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG)

The Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) is a one-time taxable cash grant of $2,000 for registered apprentices who complete their apprenticeship training and obtain their journeyperson certification in a designated Red Seal trade. Eligibility criteria include:

  • Being a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person;
  • Not being a high school student;
  • Having the required ACG supporting documents;
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program as a registered apprentice in a designated Red Seal trade; and
  • Proof of journeyperson certification in a designated Red Seal trade.

Note: The ACG program is also set to end on March 31, 2025. Applications will not be accepted after this date.

3. Canada Apprentice Loan (CAL)

The Canada Apprentice Loan (CAL) provides up to $4,000 per period of technical training to apprentices in Red Seal trades to help them complete their training. Apprentices can apply up to three months before the start of their technical training and can receive funding as early as day one of their training while they wait for their Employment Insurance claim to be processed for payment.

4. Provincial and Territorial Grants

Various provinces and territories offer additional grants and supports for apprentices:

  • Ontario: Offers the Apprenticeship Completion Bonus, a $2,000 taxable cash grant available to those who have completed their training in a non-Red Seal trade.
  • British Columbia: Through SkilledTradesBC, apprentices can access information on the AIG and ACG, as well as other supports.

5. Red Seal Program

The Red Seal Program sets common standards for tradespeople in Canada. When tradespersons complete their apprenticeships and pass the Red Seal examination, they receive a Red Seal Endorsement (“RSE”) on their provincial/territorial trade certificate, usually called a “Certificate of Qualification.” This endorsement is widely recognized and can enhance employment opportunities across Canada.

6. Employer-Sponsored Training

Many employers offer financial support or reimbursement for apprenticeship training. It’s advisable to discuss potential funding opportunities with prospective employers or unions associated with the plumbing trade.

How to Apply

To explore these funding opportunities, consider the following steps:

  • Visit the official Government of Canada website on Grants and funding for skilled trades and apprenticeship for detailed information on available grants and loans.
  • Contact your provincial or territorial apprenticeship authority to inquire about additional supports and application procedures.
  • Reach out to local plumbing unions or associations for information on employer-sponsored training programs.

By leveraging these grants and programs, individuals in Canada can acquire the necessary skills and qualifications to embark on a rewarding career as a plumber, contributing significantly to the nation’s skilled trades workforce.
