Roval Unveils Revolutionary Gravel Wheelsets: Terra Aero CLX and Terra CLX III

Instructions

Roval, the performance component arm of Specialized, has recently launched two innovative gravel wheelsets: the Terra Aero CLX and Terra CLX III. These new offerings are designed from the ground up to address the specific demands of modern gravel racing, focusing on superior aerodynamic efficiency, significant weight reduction, enhanced rider comfort through compliance, and robust puncture protection. As gravel cycling continues to evolve into a distinct competitive discipline, Roval aims to set new benchmarks for equipment performance, offering racers a distinct advantage on challenging terrains and diverse conditions.

Roval Redefines Gravel Performance with New Wheelset Innovations

In a significant development for the competitive cycling world, Roval, the renowned component brand under Specialized, has unveiled two cutting-edge gravel wheelsets: the Terra Aero CLX and the Terra CLX III. These releases mark a pivotal moment in gravel cycling technology, as Roval emphasizes that these are not mere adaptations of existing road wheel designs but rather purpose-built solutions meticulously engineered for the unique rigors of gravel racing.

The creation of the Terra Aero CLX involved extensive research and development, including over 300 digital rim-shape studies. These studies concentrated on critical aspects such as aerodynamic drag, crosswind stability, structural integrity, weight optimization, tire interface performance (supporting 35-60mm tires), and the strength of the hooked bead. Departing from hookless rim architecture, Roval opted for a bolstered 5.38mm hooked bead profile to ensure superior tire retention and mitigate pinch flats, especially when utilizing lower tire pressures on rugged terrain.

Roval's commitment to holistic design is evident in its computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies, which considered the entire wheel system—including the tire—and its interaction with a frameset. This comprehensive approach revealed that shapes appearing efficient in isolation often create turbulence at the tire-rim junction. Consequently, the Terra Aero CLX features a distinctive rim shape with a sharply cambered leading edge, achieving aerodynamic performance equivalent to a 70mm-deep road wheel. The resulting 50/40mm front/rear 'Chopped Aero' profile effectively minimizes airflow separation and sustains laminar flow at critical yaw angles (5-12 degrees), where gravel racers spend a significant portion of their time. The wheelset, weighing a competitive 1,340g, incorporates Sinc ceramic bearings and a Ratchet EXP freehub system with 36 points of engagement. It will be available for approximately £2,988 in the UK and $3,400 in the US.

Alongside the Aero CLX, Roval introduced the Terra CLX III, their lightest gravel race wheelset to date, tipping the scales at an astonishing 1,079g. This featherlight design features a shallower 27mm rim depth, maintaining the robust 4.86mm hooked bead profile and similar 38mm external and 27mm internal rim widths. To achieve this, Roval explored over 200 iterative rim shapes, evaluating each for weight, lateral stiffness, and hook stress. Both wheelsets benefit from newly developed Arris flat-top carbon spokes, which provide a 0.5-0.3 watt saving over traditional rounded spokes, are 20% stronger, and 96.6g lighter than their steel counterparts.

The Terra CLX III integrates insights from high-pressure impact standards established for Roval's Control WC MTB and Rapide CLX III wheelsets. This, combined with a meticulously tuned carbon-fiber layup, results in a 21.52% reduction in lateral stiffness. This reduction translates to enhanced control and compliance, effectively combating the power loss often associated with vibrations on corrugated gravel surfaces. Sharing hardware specifications with the Terra Aero CLX, including DT Swiss 180 hubs with 36T Ratchet EXP internals and Sinc ceramic bearings, the Terra CLX III utilizes a distinct 21/24 front-to-rear spoke configuration. With a system weight limit of 125kg, this wheelset is priced at around £2,748 in the UK and $3,200 in the US.

These new Roval wheelsets are poised to significantly impact the gravel racing landscape, offering cyclists unprecedented levels of speed, durability, and ride quality designed specifically for the rapidly evolving demands of the sport.

The introduction of Roval's Terra Aero CLX and Terra CLX III wheelsets highlights a fascinating trend in cycling: the specialization of equipment for niche disciplines. This isn't just about incremental improvements; it's about a fundamental rethinking of design based on the unique challenges of gravel racing. What truly stands out is Roval's holistic approach, considering not just the wheel itself but its interaction with tires and even the bike frame. This level of integrated design points to a future where cycling components are so finely tuned to their environment that they almost become an extension of the rider and the terrain. It encourages us to look beyond simple metrics like weight and aerodynamics in isolation, and instead appreciate how these elements synergize to create a superior riding experience. For riders, this means more than just speed; it promises enhanced control, comfort, and reliability, pushing the boundaries of what's possible on unpaved roads.
