Florida's New Speeding Law: Cracking Down on Reckless Drivers
The Introduction of Florida's 'Super Speeder' Legislation and its Immediate Ramifications
Effective July 1, Florida's updated "super speeder" law has initiated a significant shift in traffic enforcement. This legislation targets motorists traveling at speeds of 50 miles per hour or more above the established limit, or those exceeding 100 miles per hour, imposing a mandatory 30-day incarceration period and a $500 monetary penalty for initial offenses. This measure underscores a heightened commitment to curbing extreme speeding on public roadways.
First Month's Enforcement: A Surge in Penalties Across the State
Barely a month into its enforcement, Florida's "super speeder" law has already resulted in punitive actions against more than 70 individuals statewide. Data from WFTV9 Orlando, corroborated by Carscoops, indicates that 49 drivers were penalized for speeds surpassing 100 mph, while another 22 were cited for exceeding limits by at least 50 mph. Intriguingly, approximately half of these significant speeding infractions occurred within Volusia County, an area known for the Daytona International Speedway.
Extreme Velocity Encounters and Unconventional Explanations from Violators
Law enforcement officials have recorded alarming speeds, with some drivers caught at 116, 120, 135, and even 140 mph. Responses from those apprehended ranged from a Honda Civic operator believing a trooper was attempting to race him, to another individual claiming urgency for work. Motorcyclists were also implicated, with two facing citations for traveling 87 mph in a 35 mph zone. The most severe case involved a 20-year-old driving a Dodge Challenger, apprehended for an astonishing 155 mph in a 60 mph zone in Orlando, a speed differential that Lieutenant Tara Crescenzi described as akin to a "missile going down the interstate."
Authorities' Unexpected Encounter with Widespread Non-Compliance
A representative from the Florida Highway Patrol, in an interview with WFTV9, acknowledged an element of surprise regarding the rapid and extensive number of citations and arrests since the law's inception. This immediate spike in enforcement actions highlights the prevalent issue of excessive speeding within the state.
The Escalating Trend of Violations and a Strong Warning to Drivers
With 71 drivers already cited within the first five weeks, the number of "super speeder" violations is projected to continue its upward trajectory through the subsequent months of August and September. Challenges such as delays in law enforcement agencies accessing the new violation code until mid-July did not deter the initial surge. Florida authorities are issuing a stark warning to all motorists: extreme speeding will be met with severe consequences.
