Rethinking Robotics: Is Innovation Aimed at the Right Skies?
A Critique of Domestic Robotics: When Billions Yield Dishwashing Robots
Ross Gerber, a co-founder of Gerber Kawasaki, recently voiced his strong disapproval of the current trajectory in robotics, especially concerning the prototypes of humanoid robots. His comments came in response to a demonstration by Figure AI, where their humanoid robot was depicted autonomously performing household chores, specifically putting away dishes.
Gerber expressed his disappointment on social media, labeling such developments as “pathetic.” He provocatively questioned the utility of pouring trillions of dollars into creating robots for tasks as simple as washing dishes. He emphasized his belief that technological endeavors should instead concentrate on achieving more impactful innovations, such as the development of flying automobiles or mobile phones with significantly extended battery life.
The Dawn of Aerial Mobility: Xpeng's Ambition and Tesla's Vision
In stark contrast to the domestic focus of some robotics, several companies are vigorously pursuing the realm of aerial transportation. Xpeng Inc., for instance, has announced ambitious plans to commence mass production of flying cars by 2026. Their “land aircraft carrier” has already completed its initial test flights and has garnered substantial interest, securing roughly 3,000 preliminary orders.
Meanwhile, Tesla Inc.'s CEO, Elon Musk, has also hinted at the possibility of a flying Cybertruck, playfully suggesting on social media that Tesla might venture into this futuristic vehicle category. This indicates a divergence in technological priorities within the industry, with some aiming for the skies while others perfect ground-based autonomy.
Tesla's Deep Dive into Advanced AI and Robotics with Optimus
Tesla has been actively showcasing its Optimus robot, a humanoid model that recently received accolades from Salesforce Inc. CEO Marc Benioff, who praised Musk's contributions to the field of robotics.
Further solidifying its commitment to advanced technology, Tesla unveiled its “Master Plan IV,” outlining the company's strategic future, which places significant emphasis on artificial intelligence and robotics. Musk has even projected that the Optimus robot line will eventually account for over 80% of Tesla's valuation. Additionally, Musk's artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has made a substantial investment of over $40 billion into its Memphis data center, dedicated to housing the Colossus 1 Supercomputer, underscoring the immense financial and intellectual capital being channeled into cutting-edge AI and robotic advancements.
