The design philosophy centers on making the entire shopping process an immersive experience, transforming functional elements into aesthetic components.
A Visionary Retail Space in Ashiya, Japan
In February 2026, the Ashiya Optical Store, a project by RID Co., Ltd. led by Reiichi Ikeda, opened its doors in Ashiya, Hyogo, Japan. Spanning 57 square meters, this interior design masterpiece challenges conventional retail paradigms. The store's owner, deeply passionate about architecture, sought a space that would transcend mere product sales. Instead, the design facilitates a fluid interaction between customers and staff, allowing the eyewear to be viewed as an integral part of the store's visual language. Yoshiro Masuda's compelling photography captures the essence of this innovative design, highlighting the thoughtful integration of steel elements and the unique ambiance created. The space, finished in 2025, reflects a forward-thinking approach to retail interiors, where the environment enhances the product and the customer's journey.
This project serves as a compelling example of how architectural vision can elevate the mundane into the extraordinary. By reconsidering the very purpose of a retail space, RID Co., Ltd. has not only crafted a functional store but also an artistic statement. It inspires us to look beyond the immediate utility of a building and to imagine how design can enrich human experiences and interactions, transforming everyday activities into memorable moments.
